Study in the Netherlands

thanks to Gordon collins for the following information.

Applications to study in the Netherlands have grown hugely; here is some information on the Dutch system:

·         The average fee is £1500

·         1560 courses at degree, masters and PhD level are offered in English

·         UK students can get a Dutch grant (266 euros a month) provided they work part time for at least 32 hours per month and can apply for a means tested grant of up to 240 euros pm. All EU students qualify for a tuition fees loan of 142 euros pm.

·         www.studielink.nl is the Dutch equivalent of UCAS and has lots of information

·         The top universities in the Netherlands, according to the QS world ranking, are; Utrecht, Leiden, Amsterdam, Groningen, Erasmus and Maastricht

·         Health insurance is mandatory and costs around 40 euros pm

·         Private housing demand 2 months’ rent in advance as a deposit, plus a month in advance

·         Typical applications require a letter of motivation, a CV and the AS grades achieved

·         Most students apply between January and April

·         There are few campuses in the Netherlands (they are mainly a UK and US phenomena)

·         Freshers’ week tends to be in mid August

·         Most tuition is in groups of around 25 people and tends to be problem based learning

·         It is generally easier to get into a Dutch University, in terms of grades, BUT you must pass the end of year exams which are the main filter

·         Germans are overwhelmingly the largest group of non- native nationals at Dutch universities
