NHS Careers
The NHDs by far our largest employer with 1,432,000 employees in England (Tesco has 286,390). There are 315 separate organisations within the NHS in terms of employment i.e. they have their own recruitment system. 10% of the staff are doctors/dentists, 30% nurses/midwives, 5% scientists, 5% allied health professionals and the rest in a range of occupations, such as electricians and property managers. From September, students applying for an allied health profession (e.g. physiotherapy) will get their fees paid and receive a £1000 bursary. They are also eligible for a means tested bursary. The website www.nhscareers.nhs.uk contains a wealth of careers information, as well as the coursefinder site ( http://www.ukcoursefinder.com/ )which details approved university courses and has a useful section on what you can do with your degree.
